"Several strange lichens occur in arid and semi-arid areas, including unattached lichens or 'Wanderflechten' as they are called in Germany. In 1829, during the war between Russia and Persia, a town on the Caspian was suddenly covered by a lichen, which literally fell from heaven. It was made into bread and eaten by the starving people."
Lichens, William Purvis.
